Description

A contemporary account of the storm of 21 October 1638 at Widecombe-in-the-Moor, Dartmoor. The parish church of St Pancras was apparently struck by lightning during a severe thunderstorm. This is now considered to be one of the earliest accounts of ball lightening. Contemporary explanations focused on a visitation by the devil to collect the souls of gamblers.
